Heredity and Evolution

Explain how sexual reproduction gives rise to more viable variations than asexual reproduction. How does this affect the evolution of those organisms that reproduce sexually?

Asexual reproduction is the mode of reproduction in which only one parent is involved in the generation of a new individual. The young ones or the new individuals formed by asexual reproduction are identical to each other and also to their parents because there is no fusion of gametes (male and female gamete) as only one parent is involved. The asexual mode of reproduction is faster than sexual reproduction.

Sexual reproduction is the mode of reproduction in which two individuals (of different sexes) are involved in the generation of a new individual.

Significance of sexual reproduction

  • Sexual reproduction increases the chance of variation because the new individual produces by sexual reproduction has genes from two different parents.
  • Variation is essential for the evolution and survival of an individual under unfavorable conditions.
  • The species produced by sexual reproduction have a better chance of survival.
