Life Processes

The xylem in plants are responsible for

(a) transport of water.

(b) transport of food.

(c) transport of amino acids.

(d) transport of oxygen.

Xylem is a vascular tissue in plants that transport water and nutrients from the soil to the leaves. It is made up of several types of cells like tracheids and vessels. These cells are in contact with soil at roots and readily take up ions. This causes the difference in concentration of these ions between roots and soil. To eliminate this difference, water moves from the soil into the roots and hence creating a column of water that is readily pushed upward.

Therefore, the correct answer is (a) transport of water.
