Our Environment

Why is damage to the ozone layer a cause for concern? What steps are being taken to limit this damage?

Ozone is found both on the earth's surface and in the upper layers of the atmosphere. The ozone layer present in the upper layer of the atmosphere (stratosphere) shields the earth's surface from harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun that can cause skin cancer, cataract, and mutation in human beings.

The Montreal Protocol is an international agreement made in 1987. It was designed to stop the production and import of ozone-depleting substances and reduce their concentration in the atmosphere to help protect the earth's ozone layer. The United Nations' (UN) International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated on September 16 every year.
