Chemical reactions and equations

A solution of a substance ‘X’ is used for whitewashing.

(i) Name the substance ‘X’ and write its formula.

(ii) Write the reaction of the substance ‘X’ named in (i) above with water.

(i) Calcium oxide is the substance which is used for whitewashing. It is also known as burnt lime or quicklime. The calcium is an alkaline earth metal that reacts with oxygen gas to form calcium oxide whose chemical formula is CaO.

(ii) ‘X’ is Quicklime or calcium oxide. When quicklime or calcium oxide dissolved in water, a tremendous amount of heat is produced along with the formation of calcium hydroxide, also known as Slaked lime. The chemical equation for this reaction is:

CaO (s) + H2O (l) → Ca(OH)2 (aq)
