Q
Carbon and Its Compound

Question:

Draw the structures for the following compounds :

(i) Ethanoic acid

(ii) Bromopentane

(iii) Butanone

(iv) Hexanal

Are structural isomers possible for bromopentane?

Answer:

(i)- The ‘ethan’ prefix shows that the compound contains two carbon atoms while the suffix ‘oic acid’ shows that it contains ‘COOH’ functional group. The structure of ethanoic acid is shown below:

(ii)- The prefix ‘bromo’ shows that the compound contains bromine as functional group while suffix ‘pentane’ shows that it has five carbon atoms. The structure of bromopentane is shown below:

(iii)- The ‘butan’ prefix shows that the compound contains four carbon atoms while the suffix ‘one shows that it contains ketone functional group. The structure of butanone is shown below:

(iv)- The ‘hexan’ prefix shows that the compound contains six carbon atoms while the suffix ‘al’ shows that it contains an aldehyde functional group. The structure of hexanal is shown below:

Yes, the structural isomers of bromopentane are possible and some of the isomers are mentioned below:
