Carbon and Its Compound

Give a test that can be used to differentiate between saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons.

The compounds of carbon, which are linked by only single bonds between the carbon atoms are called saturated compounds while the compounds of carbon having double or triple bonds between their carbon atoms are called unsaturated compounds.

Bromine water is an orange-colored liquid that is commonly used to distinguish between saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbon. The bromine water decolorizes when reacts with an unsaturated hydrocarbon due to the formation of 1,2-dibromoalkane.

Saturated hydrocarbon does not react with bromine water and shows no change in the color of the solution.
