Metals and Non-metals

Give reasons why copper is used to make hot water tanks and not steel (an alloy of iron).

Copper metal does not react with water but iron can react with steam to form iron oxide.

3Fe (s) + 2H2O (g)  Fe3O4 (s) + 2H2 (g)

So, if the tank is made from steel, iron present in it will react with the steam and hence corrode the tank. That is why copper is used to make hot water tanks.
