Q
Chemical reactions and equations

Question:

Identify the substances that are oxidised and the substances which are reduced in the following reactions.

(i) 4Na (s) + O2 (g) → 2Na2O (s)

(ii) CuO (s) + H2 (g) → Cu (s) + H2O (l)

Answer:

(i) The oxidation reaction is a reaction in which the substance gains oxygen during the reaction while the reduction reaction is the reaction in which the substance loses oxygen during the reaction. In the given chemical equation, sodium metal gains oxygen while the oxygen molecule loses oxygen.

Thus, sodium is oxidized while oxygen is reduced in the given chemical reaction.

(ii) The oxidation reaction is a reaction in which the substance gains oxygen during the reaction while the reduction reaction is the reaction in which the substance loses oxygen during the reaction. In the given chemical equation, hydrogen gains oxygen to form water while the copper oxide loses oxygen to form copper metal.

Thus, Hydrogen is oxidized while Copper oxide is reduced in the given chemical reaction.
