In the electrolytic refining of a metal M, what would you take as the anode, the cathode and the electrolyte?


Electrolytic Refining: The electrolytic refining is the method of refining the method based on the process of electrolysis. In this process, the current is passed through the electrolyte. The metal ions deposited at the cathode as pure metal while the impurities settle down at the bottom as anode mud. This method is used to refine metal with low to moderate reactivity. The most reactive metal cannot be isolated from their oxides as they strong reducing agents. The electrolytic refining of the copper metal is shown below:

Thus, Pure metal is taken as Cathode, impure metal taken as the anode while the metal salt solution is taken as an electrolyte in Electrolytic Refining.
