Q
Metals and Non-metals

Question:

Name two metals which will displace hydrogen from dilute acids and two metals which will not.

Answer:

Metal can react with acid to form salt along with the evolution of hydrogen gas.

Metal + Acid → Salt + Hydrogen gas

The metal that is more reactive than hydrogen can displace hydrogen from acid to form salt and hydrogen gas. The reactivity of the metal is decided by the reactivity series. The reactivity series is a list of metals arranged in the order of their activities. The reactivity series for certain elements are as follows:

Zinc and iron are placed above hydrogen in a reactivity series. So, they are more reactive than hydrogen and can easily displace hydrogen from the dilute acid. While copper and mercury are placed below hydrogen in a reactivity series. So, they are less reactive than hydrogen and cannot displace hydrogen from the dilute acid.
