Q
Metals and Non-metals

Question:

Pratyush took a sulphur powder on a spatula and heated it. He collected the gas evolved by inverting a test tube over it, as shown in the figure.

(a) What will be the action of gas on:

(i) dry litmus paper?

(ii) moist litmus paper?

(b) Write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction taking place.

Answer:

(a)- When sulphur reacts with oxygen gas, sulphur dioxide gas is formed. When this gas is passed through dry litmus paper, it will show no change but when it is passed through the moist litmus paper, it will show colour change. This is because the sulphur dioxide reacts with water in the moist litmus paper to form sulphurous acid that can convert the blue litmus paper to red.

(b)- When sulphur reacts with oxygen gas, sulphur dioxide gas is formed.

S (s)+ O2 (g) → SO2 (g)

The number of atoms of different elements present in the given unbalanced equation is as follows:

The number of atoms of each element is the same in reactant as in the product. Thus, it’s a balanced chemical reaction.

When sulphur dioxide reacts with water, sulphurous acid is formed.

SO2 (g)+ H2O (l) → H2SO3 (aq)

The number of atoms of different elements present in the given unbalanced equation is as follows:

The number of atoms of each element is the same in reactant as in the product. Thus, it’s a balanced chemical reaction.
