Metals and Non-metals

State two ways to prevent the rusting of iron.

Rusting is the oxidation reaction in which the iron reacts with water and oxygen to form ferric oxide (called rust).

4Fe + 3O2 + 2xH2O → 2Fe2O3.xH2O

Rusting of iron can be prevented by:

(a) Galvanization is the process in which the iron or steel surfaces are coated with zinc to prevent them from rusting. It forms a thick layer of zinc on an iron object that is harder to remove.

(b) To prevent the rusting of iron, the iron is mixed with nickel and chromium to form stainless steel. The stainless steel is hard and noncorrosive which is commonly used to make kitchen accessories, cookware, and cutleries.
