Q
Metals and Non-metals

Question:

What are amphoteric oxides? Give two examples of amphoteric oxides?

Answer:

The oxide of metal that can react with both acid and base to form salt and water is called amphoteric oxide. For example, aluminium oxide and zinc oxide are amphoteric oxides.

 (a) Reaction with acid:

Al2O3 (s) + 6HCl (aq) → 2AlCl3 (aq)+ 3H2O(l)

ZnO (s) + 2HCl (aq) → ZnCl2 (aq)+ H2O(l)

(b) Reaction with base:

Al2O3 (s) + 2NaOH (aq) → 2NaAlO2 (aq)+ 3H2O(l)

ZnO (s) + 2NaOH (aq) → Na2ZnO2 (aq)+ H2O(l)
