Carbon and Its Compound

What are the two properties of carbon which lead to the huge number of carbon compounds we see around us?

The carbon has 4 valence electrons. It is difficult to lose or gain 4 electrons, so carbon shares its valence electrons with another atom to form larger compounds. The property of carbon to form a large number of carbon compounds is called catenation. This ability of carbon is due to the tetravalency of carbon. Hence, the two properties responsible for the formation of a huge number of carbon compounds is catenation and tetravalency.
