Metals and Non-metals

What chemical process is used for obtaining a metal from its oxide?

The metal can be extracted from its oxide by the reduction process. In this process, the metal oxide is reacted with a reduction agent like carbon to extract metal from it. For example, zinc is extracted from zinc oxide by reacting with carbon.

ZnO (s) + C (s) → Zn (s) + CO (g)

Some reactive metal like, aluminium, calcium etc can also be used as a reducing agent. For example, when ferric oxide reacts with aluminium, iron is formed along with aluminium oxide.

Fe2O3 (s) + Al (s) → Fe (l) + Al2O3 (s)
