Metals and Non-metals

Which of the following pairs will give displacement reactions?

(a) NaCl solution and copper metal

(b) MgCl2 solution and aluminium metal

(c) FeSO4 solution and silver metal

(d) AgNO3 solution and copper metal

The reactivity series is a list of metals arranged in the order of their activities. The reactivity series for certain elements are as follows:

Copper is less reactive metal than sodium. So, it will not displace sodium from the sodium chloride solution.

Cu (s) + NaCl (aq) → No reaction

Aluminium is less reactive metal than magnesium. So, it will not displace magnesium from magnesium chloride solution.

Al (s) + MgCl2 (aq) → No reaction

Silver is less reactive metal than iron. So, it will not displace iron from ferrous sulphate solution.

Ag (s) + FeSO4 (aq) → No reaction

Copper is more reactive metal than silver. So, it will displace silver from silver nitrate solution to form cupric nitrate.

Cu (s) + AgNO3 (aq) → Cu(NO3)2 (aq) + Ag (s)

Therefore, the correct answer is (d) AgNO3 solution and copper metal.
