Chapter 5: Periodic Classifications of Elements

Q&A -Ask Doubts and Get Answers

Q
Periodic Classifications of Elements

Question:

Which of the following statements is not a correct statement about the trends while going from left to right across the periods of Periodic Table:

(a) The elements become less metallic in nature

(b) The number of valence electrons increases

(c) The atoms lose their electrons more easily

(d) The oxides become more acidic

Answer:

When we go left to right in a period, the number of electrons and protons increases. So, the effective nuclear charge will increase, and hence, the size of the atom decreases. This means that the elements on the right side of the period become less metallic and form an acidic oxide. Because of their small size, the nucleus tightly holds the valence electrons and it is difficult to remove the valence electrons.

Therefore, the incorrect statement is (c) The atoms lose their electrons more easily.
