Decomposition Reaction: The reaction in which the single reactant breaks down to form simpler products is called decomposition reaction. When the reactant is decomposed to form a simpler product by using heat (thermal decomposition), light (photodecomposition) and electricity (electrolysis).

Decomposition by Heat:

Decomposition by Light:

2 AgBr (s)   ${\color{Blue} \boldsymbol{\mathbf{}\xrightarrow [ ]{ hv } }}$  2 Ag (s) + Br2 (g)

Decomposition by Electricity:

2 H2O (l)  ${\color{Blue} \boldsymbol{\mathbf{}\xrightarrow [ ]{ electricity } }}$ 2 H2 (g) + O2 (g)
