Q
Pair of linear equations in two variables CBSE NCERT Solutions

Question:

The cost of 2 kg of apples and 1 kg of grapes on a day was found to be Rs 160. After a month, the cost of 4 kg of apples and 2 kg of grapes is Rs 300. Represent the situation algebraically and geometrically.

Answer:

Solution: Let the cost of 1 kg of apple is Rs x and the cost of 1 kg of grape is Rs y.

According to given conditions, we have

2= 160                               … (1)

4+ 2= 300 2= 150 … (2)

So, we have equations (1) and (2), 2= 160 and 2= 150 which represent a given situation algebraically.

For equation 2x + y = 160, we have the following points which lie on the line.

x

y

For equation 2x + y = 150, we have the following points which lie on the line.

x

y

We can plot the points for both of the equations 2x + y = 160 & 2x + y = 150.

The following is the graphical representation of the Equations.
