Body Movements

Answer the following:

(a) What is a ball and socket joint?

(b) Which of the skull bones are movable?

(c) Why can our elbow not move backwards?

(a) In the ball and socket joint, one end of the bone has a round shape like a ball which fits into a hollow space (socket or cavity) in the other bone. It allows movement in all directions. Example: Shoulder joints and hip joints.

(b) Fixed joint is present between the skull and upper jaw. Only the lower jaw is a movable bone in a skull.

(c) Hine joint allows the movement of bones in only one direction. The elbow joint is an example of a hinge joint that is why we cannot move our elbow backward.
