Fibre to Fabric

From which parts of the plant cotton and jute are obtained?

Natural fibre is the fibre that is obtained from natural sources like plants and animals. Both jute and cotton are plant fibre.

The cotton plant is grown in fields that have black soil and a warm climate. The fruit of the cotton plant is called a cotton boll. The cotton ball is about the size of a lemon and these bolls burst open after maturation to form cotton fibres.

Jute is obtained from the stem. A bundle of jute plants are kept in water to loosen the fibre from the wood. This process is known as retting. Retting is done so that the fibres can be easily extracted from the woody part of the plant.

Hence, cotton fibre is obtained from the fruit of the cotton plant while jute fibre is obtained from the stem of the jute plant.
