Q
Physical and Chemical Changes

Question:

Explain why burning of wood and cutting it into small pieces are considered as two different types of changes

Answer:

Physical change: A change in which the substance undergoes a process to change its physical properties called a physical change. It is a reversible process that does not form a new product.

Chemical change: A change in which the substance undergoes a process to change its chemical composition called a chemical change. It is an irreversible process that forms a new product.

The log of wood is a substance that is cut down into smaller wood pieces. So, the bigger wood changes into smaller wood pieces. This means that the physical appearance of wood changes but the chemical composition of the wood remains the same. So, it is a physical change.

When the wood is burned, the carbon in the wood reacts with oxygen which changes its chemical composition to form ash along with heat and light. So, it is a chemical change.
