Q
Acids,Bases, and Salts

Question:

Three liquids are given to you. One is hydrochloric acid, another is sodium hydroxide and third is a sugar solution. How will you identify them? You have only turmeric indicator.

Answer:

Turmeric is the type of natural indicator which is used to check the acidity or basicity of any substance. It is yellow in an acidic and neutral medium while it changes its color to red in a basic medium.

When turmeric solution is added to hydrochloric acid, the color of the solution remains yellow. This confirms that hydrochloric acid is a strong acid. Similarly, the turmeric solution remains yellow in sugar solution because the sugar solution is neutral. But when turmeric solution is added to sodium hydroxide, the color of the solution changes to red because sodium hydroxide is a strong base.
