Q
Combustion and Flame

Question:

Abida and Ramesh were doing an experiment in which water was to be heated in a beaker. Abida kept the beaker near the wick in the yellow part of the candle flame. Ramesh kept the beaker in the outermost part of the flame. Whose water will get heated in a shorter time?

Answer:

A flame has three zones:

  1. Outermost zone of the flame is blue in colour and it is the hottest part of the flame. Complete combustion takes place at this zone.
  2. Middle zone of the flame is yellow in colour and it is moderately hot. The partial combustion takes place at this zone.
  3. Innermost zone of the flame is black in colour and least hot. At this zone, no combustion takes place, and unburned wax vapors of a candle.

Abida kept the beaker near the wick in the yellow part while Ramesh kept the beaker in the outermost part of the flame. This means that Abida kept the beaker in an innermost zone where no combustion takes place while Ramesh kept the beaker in the hottest region of the candle. Hence, Ramesh's beaker will get heated in the shortest time.
