Q
Some Natural Phenomena

Question:

Describe with the help of a diagram an instrument which can be used to detect a charged body.

Answer:

Electroscope is a device used to check whether an object is electrically charged or not.

When we touch the charged object with the metal clip, the electrical charge can be transferred from a charged object to another uncharged object (aluminium leaves) that is through a metal conductor. This process is called charging by conduction. The charge flow in the metal and both the aluminium leaf becomes charged. The nature of a charge on both the leaves and object is of the same type. Hence, they repel each other.

The divergence in the aluminium leaves shows that the object is charged.

When the metal strips repel each other, it proves that the body is charged because repulsion is the sure test to detect that a body is charged or not.
