Q
Friction

Question:

Explain why sliding friction is less than static friction.

Answer:

Friction is caused by the irregularities between the two surfaces. When we attempt to move an object, we have to apply a force to overcome interlocking between the irregularities of the object's surface and the other surface. When an object is in motion, the sliding friction is smaller than the static friction as the interlocking during motion is very small. Thus, sliding friction is less than static friction.
