Chapter - 3 Sound

Q&A -Ask Doubts and Get Answers

Lightning and thunder take place in the sky at the same time and at the same distance from us. Lightning is seen earlier and thunder is heard later. Can you explain why?

The speed of sound is 344 m/s whereas the speed of light is 3 imes 10^8 m/s. The speed of sound is less than the speed of light. Due to this reason, the thunder takes more time to reach the Earth as compared to the light, which is faster. Therefore, before we hear thunder, a flash of lightning is seen.
