Question:

A 8000 kg engine pulls a train of 5 wagons, each of 2000 kg, along a horizontal track. If the engine exerts a force of 40000 N and the track offers a friction force of 5000 N, then calculate:

(a) the net accelerating force and

(b) the acceleration of the train. 

Answer:

(a) Net accelerating force = Force exerted by the engine - friction force

Net accelerating force = 40000 N - 5000 N

Net accelerating force = 35000 N

(b) Net accelerating force on wagons = 35000 N

Total mass of the train = Mass of train + Mass of 5 wagons

Total mass of the train = 8000 kg + 5 \times 2000 kg

Total mass of the train = 8000 kg + 10000 kg

Total mass of the train = 18000 kg

For finding acceleration(a) of the train, we use

F = ma 

35000 = 18000 \times a

a = \frac{35000}{18000}

a = 1.944\ m/s^2
