If the moon attracts the earth, why does the earth not move towards the moon?


According to the universal law of gravitation and Newton's third law, we all know that the force of attraction between two objects is the same, however in the opposite directions. So the earth attracts the moon with a force same as the moon attracts the earth but in opposite directions.

By Newton's Second Law, F = ma

a = frac{F}{m}

For a given force, acceleration is inversely proportional to the mass of an object.

a propto frac{1}{m}

We know,

Mass of the Earth >> the mass of the moon.

Hence, the acceleration experienced by the earth due to the gravitational pull of the moon is very small in comparison to that experienced by the moon due to the earth. For this reason, the Earth does not move towards the moon.
