Explain the importance of fossils in deciding evolutionary relationships


Fossils are formed when a dead organism or its part gets buried in the mud. The mud hardens with the passage of time and bears the impression of that organism or its part. The hard parts like bone and shells get buried in the sediments harden into the rock. Examples of fossils are shown below:

The fossils give us information about the extinct animals and plants that lived hundred years ago. It helps us in studying evolution and helps us to study the animals that lived in prehistoric times.
