Name the substance which on treatment with chlorine yields bleaching powder.


The bleaching powder is also known as calcium oxychloride. The pH is defined as a scale which is used to measure the concentration of hydrogen ion present in the solution. Calcium oxychloride is produced when the chlorine gas is passed through the dry slaked lime. The chemical formula of slaked lime is Ca(OH)2.

Ca(OH)2 (s) + Cl2 (g) → CaOCl2 (s) + H2O (l)
