Materials: Metals and Non-metals

One day Reeta went to a jeweller’s shop with her mother. Her mother gave an old gold jewellery to the goldsmith to polish. Next day when they brought the jewellery back, they found that there was a slight loss in its weight. Can you suggest a reason for the loss in weight?

Aqua regia is the mixture of corrosive liquid which is made by mixing three parts of concentrated hydrochloric acid and one part of concentrated nitric acid. It is commonly used to polish gold jewellery. When gold is dissolved in it, the outer dull layer gets dissolved while the inner shiny layer appears. This causes a slight loss of weight of the gold jewellery.
