Chapter - 3 Gravitation

Q&A -Ask Doubts and Get Answers

Gravitational force on the surface of the moon is only 1/6 as strong as gravitational force on the earth. What is the weight in newtons of a 10 kg object on the moon and on the earth?

Weight of an object on the moon = frac{1}{6}	imes Weight of an object on the Earth

Weight = Mass × Acceleration

Acceleration due to gravity (on Earth), g = 9.8 ms^{-2}

The weight of a 10 kg object on the Earth = 10 	imes 9.8 = 98 N

Therefore, weight of the same object on the moon = frac{1}{6} imes 98 = 16.34 N
